CINEMA ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES THE PREMIERE OF
CRY OF THE CITY PART 1: THE LEGEND OF CORNBREAD

A story 52 years in the making finally sees the light of day after many turbulent ups and downs with the release of this historic documentary on the life of Darryl ?Cornbread? McCray ? the Philly native that originated modern graffiti in the late 1960s. Everyone from young hip-hop fans around the world to old-school Philly natives who grew up seeing this infamous graffiti artist?s tags on everything from walls and bridges to jets and elephants have been eagerly anticipating the release of Cry of the City part 1: The Legend of Cornbread. There are two screenings scheduled on April 25th at 7:30 p.m. at the Prince Music Theater Black Box on 1412 Chestnut Street and on April 26th at 8:00 p.m. at The Rotunda on 4014 Walnut Street to debut the documentary. Both screening events are all ages and open to the public with a $5 suggested donation at the door.

Presented by Freshout and Cinema Alliance, the first screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the historical progression of graffiti art, Cornbread?s role in shaping a cultural movement, and the societal implications of hip-hop and graffiti. The director of the documentary, Sean McKnight, will facilitate the discussion. Speakers on the panel will include Cornbread, Jane Golden (director of the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program), Erick Cohen (owner of local graffiti shop Rarebreed), Will Boone (professor of Hip-hop & Black Culture at Temple University), and Notorious Bik (former graffiti writer and friend of Cornbread). There will also be artwork displayed at the event by local graffiti artists Distort, Ntel, Curve, Caesar, and Seus.

The second screening will include performances by the band known as Cornbread playing funk and soul before and after the documentary. There will be graffiti artists painting live outside the venue, as well as break dancers performing while the band plays. After the screening, there will be a Q&A and autograph signing with Cornbread. This screening will be part of The Rotunda?s monthly hip-hop event, The Gathering.

DVDs of the documentary will be on sale at each screening.

Synopsis: Cry of the City Part 1: The Legend of Cornbread

This meeting is a follow up meeting on this very exciting step we can take as a group. We need to get on the calendar with some meetings RIGHT!!!
I am really excited about National AIDS Awareness Day because it gives us a chance to give back.

Our meeting is an activity meeting where we will bring poems that we have and we can read them aloud or have someone else read them for us. I really want to see all of you there and ready to work. If we all participate this could be huge!! Imagine the possibilities?

Please consider what we are performing for and realize that we need poems that will inspire people to get tested and also to be safe. I would love to see poems about safe sex, condoms, monogamy, or anything that is relevant to AIDS and awareness. If anyone is interested in doing a duet poem with a guys and girls side when it comes to condoms or asking about you status let me know. I would be interested in pursuing that with you.

As a group we are a force to be reckoned with so let's get together and kick some AIDS butt!!! We have now grown to 30 members and I am so excited by the exponential. When I joined this group I think I think I was the 9th member and now look at us. ( YAHOO)

Please bring any friends that would like to volunteer or perform. We are looking for musicians, dancers or anyone that wants to get up and put on a show for a super cause or anyone that may just want to pick up trash .
If you don't want to read your work still bring in a piece and maybe someone else can read it for you or it can be put to music. Please don't let the fear of someone hearing your work stop you from coming to this meeting.
Please if you belong to any other groups INVITE them to join us.

I would love to continue this theme of benefit shows for AIDS and any other charities that we can support at this meeting bring to the table a charity that you would like to support and from there we can come up with show ideals and other way to give back to your charity. Lets look at doing 10 show a year for 2007 and if we can meet that goal as a group we can do anything. If you dream of getting published or recorded this is the place to put that dream into practice.

This is a NO pressure supportive group. I just want you to come.

HOPE to see you there.
